About
With the project “Hands folded in prayer”, ZETA has won 3. Prize in the open competition for a new church and missionary house at Argir in Tórshavn.
The site of the church is a natural river valley that the locals use as a recreational place within the city. The focus of the project was therefore to create a church that would fit naturally into the area and still allow people to use the river valley as a green and recreational place. With a simple starting point of hands folded in prayer, the project creates a church deeply integrated into the landscape and the surrounding paths.
The church room itself focuses on creating a deeply intimate space for prayers and contemplation. The room is created as an inner wooden shell that embraces the worshippers and shuts out the outside world. The organic shape created a seemingly endless room without corners and sharp edges. The simple use of all wooden surfaces creates a warm and calming atmosphere.
